TPS65982 as sink for Apple Adapter

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65982, TPS65982-EVM

Has anyone been able to get the Apple Macbook Air USB C charger to negotiate up to it's maximum voltage?

It doesn't seem to negotiate above 5V in my testing.  The Google Chromebook adapter works perfectly however.

  • Hi Matthew,

Can you describe your test set-up? What firmware do you have on the TPS65982?

    Regards,
    Karl
    • The Apple MacBook Air's AC Adapter will offer 14.8V@2A as PDO Object #2
    • The ChromeBook Pixel AC Adapter will offer 12V@3A as Object #2 and 20V@3A as Object #3.
    • They both offer 5V in Object #1, per the PD spec.

These Source PDOs can easily be observed with a USB-PD Analyzer if you have one available.

The TPS65982-EVM has many default configurations that will accept any voltage between 12-20V@3A, but they will revert back to 5V because the MacBook AC adapter only has 2A to offer.

Feel free to Load the Default UFP-Sink Only FW in the TPS65982-CONFIG Tool and change Sink PDO2 = 14.8V@2A, load it on the EVM, and measure VBUS.

If you need additional information on this process, the EVM and Config Tool both have User's Guides available on ti.com
