DP83848 Power consumption

Hello, 

Could you please clarify the difference of power value between the datasheet page 13/78 and the application note:

  : 


Power down mode :

- Why is the Typ value of the datasheet (14mA)higher than the Worst case of the application note (7.95mA)?


100 Base-TX Full Duplex Operating Mode Data :

- Will the Worst case of the application note (93.87mA) be the maximum value of the datasheet (with typical value = 81mA)?

    The values mentioned on the datasheet are obtained after averaging data over a very wide range of samples. Applications notes, however, can sometimes use a much smaller sample size. Applications notes are designed to provide additional information about a specific topic. In this case, the power app note aims at detailing the key factors affecting power consumption. Due to a difference in sample size, it is quite possible that the numbers in the Datasheet and Application notes will not match. Although the values in the Application note do not match exactly to that in the datasheet, they also do not violate any conditions/values mentioned in the datasheet. The Application note values are accurate with relation to the sample size over which they were measured.

    Can we specify what is the maximum values in the datsheet ?
  • Hi Mohamed,

    No we cannot. There are too many variables to give a maximum because a lot has to do with the type of MAC you are using (i.e. type of IO load, IF you are using, LEDs..etc). Typical numbers are all that we provide along with the conditions tested under for those numbers.

    In the application note ""AN-1540 Power Measurement of Ethernet Physical Layer products _ snla089b", there is this comment :

    I would like to have a confirmation if the current values in the application note include the current in the resistive terminaison and transformer?



    Or if it's into the datasheet that include the current in the resistive terminaison and transformer?





    Do we have a tool or worst case calculation sheet to calculation the total current consumption (PHY + resistive terminaison + transformer) in the different modes ?
