We wanted to design a 24V digital input circuitry which can accept both NPN (sinking) and PNP (sourcing) type inputs. Do you have any recommended part suitable for this application?

Will the serializer part “SN65HVS880” part accept both NPN-PNP inputs or will it accept only PNP (sourcing inputs)?

Hello Mallikarjuna,

The SN65HVS880 is designed to accept PNP inputs, as the input channels operate as controlled current sinks. Can you give any more information about the application requirements and explain why you need the ability to accept NPN and PNP type inputs?

Some factory floors only work with NPN input types. Is there an alternative recommended method to interface to these sensors?

Hi Juan,

I unfortunately do not have a good solution to recommend for NPN inputs at this time. The HVS880 device would be able to properly sense high/low levels if an external pull-up resistance were used, but would not be able to limit the current when the sensor output is active.
