Using 2 TPS65982 IC for two Type-C Connectors

Hello,

In one of my project, I want to use two Type-C connectors one Type-C connected to Host and and another Type-C connected to Device.

The Host Type-C will be acting as DFP and Device Type-C acting as UFP.

I am using two TPS65982 Devices to implement the USB-PD between Host and Device.

Can I use I2C Ports to communicate between them?

Can I transfer the Power of 100W (20V,5A) from Type-C (Host) to another Type-C (Device) with the below diagram?

Can I take the VBUS voltage from Type-C(5V or 20V) to PP_HV and PP_EXT pins,without giving external voltages to these pins?

Hello Team,

I also would like to know that we can manage two USB Type C port using a single TPS65982.

And also for 5-20V switch device, is there any available single chip solution like RAA230161.

Please update as early as possible.

Hi Sunil,

Great question! You can tie the PP_EXT or PP_HV paths together and rely on the reverse current protection to keep the system safe. For the device port we have a low cost efficient way of implementing the 5V, 9V, 12V, 15V, and 20V. Since the design has not been released can you please send an email to usbpowerdelivery@list.ti.com.

Hello Jacob,

As in our application we are using TPS65982, it can switch PP_5V0 to PP_HV and PP_EXT.

But as we would like to support multiple voltage devices like 5V,9V,12V,20V.

So how would we detect the voltage level of attached device?

And again i would like to know 5-20V switch device single chip solution.

please revert back ASAP.

Hello Jacob,

Yes , i have referred schematic.

In that as per me its like a buck converter chip that can provide multiple output voltage.

So in that the input range can be 5-20V?

What can be the current rating for power transfer?

Hi Sunil,

Yes that is correct. If you support 20V @ 3A you must be able to support 3A on all rails below 5V, 9V, 15V, and 12V (option). This particular buck can do 4A, so sizing the PFET and inductor accordingly. There are GPIOs that can be configured for each of the PDO in the system that will be able to control the feedback.

The key for the 20V path with a 20V input is to make sure that the DC/DC support 100% duty cycle.

Now i would like to configure TPS65982 as Source and Sink of power. That means we need to configure it as DRP.

Now in DRP mode it can support voltages 5V, 12V, 16V, 20V.

So can we have a sample configuration file?

Please let me help to how to configure it.

Hi Sunil,

We are putting together a design guide for this that will show the hardware and firmware configurations needed.

You just have to map the PDOs to the appropriate GPIOs. On the TPS65982 you still need to connect the system 5V to PP_CABLE and PP_5V for VCONN and analog control.

We are shooting for next week, does this work out?
