TPS65982, TPS65986 - function

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65982, TPS6598X-CONFIG

Hi all

Would you mind if we ask the function of TPS65982 and TPS65986?

Our customer is looking for UFP Type-C with PD device with following spec.

<Spec>
-It is possible to operate the device without CPU.
-After 20V is supplied, the system power is ON with DCDC converter via FETs of HV_GATE1 and HV_GATE2.
So, is it possible to adjust the threshold of HV_GATEX operation using Configuration tool?
-If it occurs OCP, the voltage switches off.
-They don't use USB signal.(Only PD device)

So, as USB-PD power switcher with CC contorl, is TPS65982 fittable?

kind regards,

Hirotaka Matsumoto

  • Hi team

We guess that your team is so busy, however could you give us the reply?

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Matsumoto-san,

Both the TPS65982 and TPS65986 can operate without a CPU (or external MCU) in a USB Power Delivery application. Integrated in the IC is a PD Policy Manager capable of handling all the PD communication.

In the TPS6598X-Config tool, you can set the source and sink PDOs along with FET path to use. If the PP_HVE or (PP_external) FET path is used HV_GATE1 and HV_GATE2 will be set dynamically based upon the PD contract established between the TPS6598x device and the PD controller on the other end of the system.

The TPS65982 or TPS65986 can work in the customer application you described. Does the customer application require either Thunderbolt 3 support or greater than 60W of power? If yes, then the TPS65982 is the correct IC. If no, then the TPS65986 is the correct IC.

If you have any other questions please let us know!

    Regards,
    Karl

About Q2, could you give us the reply?
We always appreciate for your help.

  • Matsumoto-san,

The power (or FET) path that is used (5V, HV, or HVE) is configured in Source Capabilities. The FET path is decided by the source based on which PDO is negotiated. The type of supply (fixed, variable, battery) as well as minimum / maximum voltages for each PDO can be configured in both Source Capabilities and Sink Capabilities.

As an additional note, the configuration for each FET switch (5V, HV, and HVE) as input/output/disabled are configured in "System Configurations" within the Configuration GUI.
