DP83848 PHY - What does RX_ER mean?

We are having an intermittent RX issue on a new DP83848 PHY circuit design.

The circuit design is one we have done before successfully, but we changed the layout on a new design and are having intermittent RX issues. We can transmit packets perfectly, but we are receiving less than half of the packets successfully. The RX_ER pin is signaling the indicate the DP83848 PHY knows that something is wrong.

We we're hoping someone could on what the RX_ER pin means, as the datasheet does not explain much.

Thanks,

-Devon

  • Hi Devon,

    RX_ER is defined in IEEE802.3u.
There are a few things that will trigger RX_ER:
    1. PMD Error
    2. PCS Error

Opcode violation, DC balance issue, SSD/ESD violation

Are the RX_ERs dependent on cable length? If the layout of the analog side is poor, it could eat into the margins and cause poor performance at longer cable distances.

Can you send a screenshot of the schematic and layout for the PHY?

    Kind regards,
    Ross
