whether or not to use external LVDS transmitters/receivers

hello, let's say I have 2 PCBs separated by 100 feet.  They talk to each other by LVDS and they both have FPGAs on them with LVDS capable I/Os.

Besides better ESD protection, is there any other advantage to using LVDS transmitters/receivers external to the FPGA rather than using the internal LVDS buffers inside the FPGA?

thank you
