TPS65982 question from POS customer

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: HD3SS460, TPS65982, TPS6598X-CONFIG

Hi team,

Customer is designing POS and plan to add type C PD into their design to support 5V 3A, 12V 3A and 20V 5A, USB HS and SS.

We are promoting TPS65982 + HD3SS460 to customer. Some questions from customer need your help to answer.

1. With config. ID 0 (S1=0000), same setting on both end, what happen when adapter is plugin into both EVM?

2. Need confirmation TPS65982 will not effect USB HS and SS enumeration?

3. Is there a config. which allow sink and source 20V @5A, 12V @3A, 5A @3A? 100W is the priority.

Customer like to have 20V @5A to supply from their system to device, and device to system whenever adapter is plugin, and the type-C connector support standard type-C peripheral as well.

Both system and device will design in TPS65982+HD3SS460 on each end. Thank you for your advice.

regards, Ken

  • 1. Config ID# 0 <-- --> Config ID #0 (Dock to Dock) will result in a 5V, 0A PD contract but will not enter the DisplayPort (DP) Alternate Mode because they are both UFP_D's for DP.

Config ID #0<-- --> Config ID #3 (Dock to Mobile Workstation) will result in a 20V, 3A contract assuming you are not using an e-marked cable to support 5 Amps.

This configuration setting will also enter DisplayPort Mode because the Mobile Workstation is a DFP_D and the Dock is a UFP_D (so they re compatible).

    2. TPS65982 will definitely NOT affect USB SS enumeration. TPS65982 will only impact USB HS enumeration if the USB2.0 Endpoint is enabled and DisplayPort Mode fails to enter because a Tablet/Laptop does not support it.

    3. Config ID #3 may accept a 5A contract if an e-marked cable is used that supports 5 Amps. The dock will send a Discover ID message to the cable: If the cable responds with 5A capability, 20V/5A will be advertised as the highest Source PDO; if the cable does not respond or responds and says it only supports 3 Amps, 20V/3A will be advertised as the highest Source PDO. This is handled automatically for safety reasons.

If Config ID #3 does not ask for 5A, Config ID #7 definitely will, but it will not enter DP Mode. At this point, you can create custom FW in the TPS6598X-CONFIG Config-Tool to match the application's needs exactly and re-test.

Please attach a Block Diagram to show the System to Device connection options, and the power flow in each scenario (for example. Barrel Jack to Device, then to System through VBUS to charge battery.) Are there batteries in the system? Can every product be line-powered or bus-powered? A detailed Block Diagram can answer a lot of these questions.
