Our company firewall blocks .exe whether it's renamed or even renamed inside a zip file, it's a pain. I'll change my email in E2E to use my personal gmail address. Could you please send it again in 5 minutes. Thank you so much.

Can you please send me the Eye Scan software as soon as possible to Eric.Hereford@stryker.com. I recommend that you make this software readily available on line as no engineers like having to log into a site and have someone email them the software.

Hi Moises,

I used the TMDS181RGZ EVM and tried to run the eye scan tool. I am able to output a video from a camera source into a monitor via the EVM. However, I couldn't get any waveform when I run the eye scan tool scan. I follow the default jumper setting from sllu228a.pdf (figure 1). Our source is using HDMI 1.3a, is this an issue?

Hi Peck,

When you run eye diagram, do you see at least a horizontal line?
Are you able to read the registers?

Using an HDMI1.3a source shouldn't be a problem.

The EVM setting:
J1 -> 2~3
J6 -> 1~2
J4 -> 1~2
J3 -> 1~2
J8 -> 1~2
The rest NC

I am able to read registers and see a horizontal line.
There is something I notice:

1) At the register map, when I try to write a bit (ie page 0, bit 0 at address 00 or any other bit) it will always return to the original value after clicking on the write button.
2) If my equalizer is set to fixed, I try to change any information & apply changes but it will always return to the original value.

There are some control in the <HDMI control> I couldn't set but some I can set.
Is this normal?

Hi Peck,

I think I know what is the problem.
Eye diagrams only work when the device is in retimer mode, perhap the resolution you are using is low enough to work in redriver mode only, you can select a higher resolution or forcing retimer mode.

Regarding the register, firt 8 registers are read only, that's why your writing has no effect.
Some other registers are updatable this means, they update from the cconfiguration in GPIO or device self configuration.
So, you may need to set the device in I2C mode(I2C_EN=High) then, write I2C registers like register A bit 7

Hi Moises,

Now I am able to see the scan result after forcing to retimer mode. I have a few questions that required your advice:

1) What is the function of various equalizer FTC? It seems that it has to be set to "135MHz for below 1.25Gbps" then I can adjust the equalizer level.

2) Is the adaptive or fixed mode a preferred method? I see that whether I choose adaptive or adjust the EQ level from lowest to highest does not make any different to the eyes.

Hi Peck,

The FTC value select the operating frequency, you can see when EQ level remains the same, but you change FTC, fixed EQ gain varies.

Eye diagrams can't be taken with adaptive EQ

Changing EQ level does change the eye diagrams, you can switch between levels 0 and 15 to see the change.

Hi Moises,

Regarding the FTC, there are 4 options: 5G, 2.5G, 1.25G & <1.25G.

Does it work this way when we change the resolution, we have to set a suitable FTC:

1) HDMI 2.0 4K 60f or 30f -> 5G
2) HDMI 1.4 Full HD -> 5G or 2.5G
3) HDMI 1.3 Full HD -> 2.5G or 1.25G
4) HDMI 1.3 HD -> 1.25 or <1.25G

If we output a HDMI 2.0 4K video but choose <135MHz for below 1.25Gbps> setting, the eye will be badly affected?

On the other hand if we output a HDMI 1.3 HD video & choose <805MHz for 5G> setting, the eye will be badly affected?

Hi Peck,

We have to review those values but that's a good reference, this is a reference to specification revisions, resolutions and data rates

HDMI 2.0 4k@60Hz -> 6Gbps

HDMI 1.4(1.3) 4k@30Hz -> 3.4Gbps

HDMI1.2(1.1, 1.0) FHD @60Hz -> 1.65Gbps

The data rate doesn't depend on HDMI version only, it depends on resolution, refresh rate, color depth, and chroma sub-sampling, in automatic mode TMDS181 will choose the right data rate range, in fixed mode you have to know what is the data rate and select it.

Choosing the wrong range will have an impact in the eye diagram because EQ is not selected for the desired frequency.
