TCA6418E current consumption

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TCA8418E

Hi,

Customer would like to know the current consumption when our chip is in active state with VDD=3.3V.  Furthermore, they would like to know the consumption when specific GPIOS are configured an inputs, and some specific GPIOs are configured as output with specific output at Hi or Lo level.

May I know what kind of current consumption value we can deliver here?

THanks!

Antony

  • Hi,

i saw some curve regarding I/O source current and I/O sink current in datasheet. May you explain what does that mean? Can we make use of these curves to calculate the current consumption as mentioned in the post above?

    THanks!

    Antony
  • Hi Antony,

The current consumption of the device can be found in the Recommended Operation Conditions Table, listed as IOL (See Picture Below):

In the case of current consumption when certain GPIOs are active and others are not, I have tested this in the past to see if there is significant variance and it has shown that there is little to no change on the current consumption.

As for the graph that you had mentioned, this does not have any relation to the current consumption.

    Thanks,

    Siby

  • Hi Siby,

    THanks!

Customer's target to have it below 5mA.  Do you see any possibility to achieve this or any other chip with the same funcionality can make it?

    Thanks!

    Antony

  • Hi Antony,

This may not be possible, Is there a specific number of GPIOs that the customer needs? The TCA8418E is our special function device that the 6418E is based off of. However, you have latchable interrupts with the 8418E and other extra features. This may be overkill for the customer application.

    Thanks,
    Siby
  • Antony,

Quick comment, the specification that I have shown is based on the full device GPIOs being used at the same time. I will check with the team to see if under 5mA is possible.

    Thanks,
    Siby
  • Hi Antony,

Sorry, but I was misunderstanding the question that was being asked.

Please take a look at the following image which shows the MAX current consumption of the device which is under the 5mA that the customer is asking for.

    Thanks,

    Siby
