Hi Team,

My customer wants to know how does TPS65982 operate if power role swap is occured.
I believe he should see a USB Power delivery specification (7.3.9 "Sink Requested Power Role Swap" and 7.3.10 "Source Requested Power Role Swap").
Is my understanding correct?

I would like to have your advice.

Best Regards,
Yaita / Japan disty

  • Yaita-san,

Yes, the TPS65982 is fully compliant with the Power Role Swap definition in the USB PD spec.

Figure 7-20 on page 258 of PD2.0 v1.2 is very helpful in understand Section 7.3.9, Sink Requested Power Role Swap, and
Figure 7-21 on page 261 of PD2.0 v1.2 is very helpful in understand Section 7.3.10, Source Requested Power Role Swap.

Remember that the TPS65982 is configurable in the TPS6598X-CONFIG configuration tool.
When you only want to passively accept Power Role Swaps or control the TPS65982 from an embedded controller (EC), just browse to the "Control Config" tab and turn ON "Process Swap to Sink" and "Process Swap to Source".

If your application is a Desktop PC or Monitor, for example, which is a DRP but can only be a power source, you will want to turn ON "Process Swap to Source" and "Initiate Swap to Source" and turn OFF "Process Swap to Sink." This way, the TPS65982 will send a "Reject" message whenever the far-end devices initiates a PR_Swap that would force the TPS65982 to become a Sink.
