TPS65982 CC pin failed issue

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: HD3SS460, TPS65982

My customer use TPS65982 and HD3SS460 in their TVSET .When connected with Macbook with type-c wire,   TVSET will charge the Macbook and will display

the Macbook's  pannel content .  Now  we find one issue as belows:

After plug and unplug Type-c wire about 30 times ,  there will be a voltage spike on CC1 Or CC2  up to 8.4V . This spike will destroy the CC pin of the TPS65982.

The Type-c  wire need VCONN powered .

The test wave of CC1 and  CC2  is as belows, you can see the spike on CC1. and the spike happened when Vbus from 5V to 12V.

Can any one help me on this issue?

Thanks very much.

  • Can you please provide the Manufacturer and Part # of the Type-C cable you are testing with?

Which MacBook are you testing with, the 2015 model or the 2016 model? They look very similar.

We have concerns that the pins on some Type-C cables will be unreliable and bend very easily with rapid plugging/un-plugging. Cables should be robust enough to prevent the high voltage pins (VBUS)  from contacting the lower voltage pins (CC1/2 and SBU1/2), but we cannot guarantee the robustness of cables. This is why it will help to know the cable brand and part # you are using.

  • Hi, Brian

         Thanks for your reply.

The Macbook model is :A1534, it should be 2015 model.

We test four kinds  of type-c wires. And we found if there is no Vconn provided  , there is  no voltage spike ,even the VBUS changed from 5V to 12V.

No.1          Macbook type-c                                                                                                  No Vconn needed     No voltage spike

No.2           60mm sample type-c wire (provided by customer's vendor)                    No Vconn needed     No voltage spike

No.3           Brand:  UGREEN     Model:  US161 (usb3.1)     length:1.5 meters           Vconn needed           found Voltage spike

You can find the wire on this: www.lulian.cn/product-482-cn.html

       Sorry for  no English version.

No.4           100mm sample type-c wire (provided by customer's vendor)                    Vconn needed           found Voltage spike

Attached is the TPS65982  Firmware config file  , you can open it with Webtool.

Can you give me some advice ?  Thanks.

  • Thank you for your detailed response.

I will need to run some tests and speak to my colleagues about this type of failure to see if it has been identified before.

The effect of VCONN is an interesting correlation to investigate. Thanks for your help.
