Enable/ check Soft start pin on TPS65986 EVM

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65986EVM

Hello all,

I am working on a demo using the TPS65986EVM and am facing a situation where I suspect the soft start or the current limit on the HV pin is causing the EVM to be unable to establish a PD contract in cases that require large inrush current.

  • I was hoping I could use the configuration tool, or utilities tool to identify if the soft start is enabled or not - where can I find that information?

  • As well as the "ILIMHV" which on page 12 of the TPS65986 Datasheet states is automatically selected based on the application needs - I want to check to see if the LIMHV is set appropriately. - how can I check this when the device is operating?

  • The other question is the soft start cap on the TPS65986EVM, I don't believe there is any issue in changing that value, since it should just change the ramp rate (according to section 8.3.3.10), do you foresee any issues with increasing or decreasing that capacitor from it's default 0.22uF value?

Thanks!

Any feedback is appreciated.

best regards,

Saqib Mohammad

  • Soft Start is enabled by default. There is no configuration option to enable it.

Yes, you can perform a calculation to extend the soft start ramp time (lower the slew rate) by calculating a new capacitance.

You would just need to remove and re-solder a capacitor for C5 of the TPS65986EVM.
