Questions about Alternate mode implementation for TPS65982

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65982, HD3SS460, HD3SS3212

Hi team,

I have a few questions about alternate mode impementation of TPS65982.

First, how does the integrated HS MUX work? According to the datasheet, the relevant signals include USB 2.0 and SBU, does this mean the two signals couldn’t work at the same time? If so, USB 2.0 signals are disabled if system is in an alternate DP mode, right?

Second, about the external SS MUX, since TPS65982 already has HS MUX inside, HD3SS460 is not applicable any more in this system, right? (since HD3SS460 also has low speed mux inside)

Third, also I didn’t see any MUX like HD3SS3212 or HD3SS460 in TPS65982 EVM, only the switch bank S1, so how can the system perform signal routing in alternate mode specifically?

  • Hi Susan,

Answers to your queries are as follows:

    1. How does the integrated HS MUX work? According to the datasheet, the relevant signals include USB 2.0 and SBU, does this mean the two signals couldn’t work at the same time? If so, USB 2.0 signals are disabled if system is in an alternate DP mode, right?

Both USB 2.0 and SBU signals can work together. If you carefully see the datasheet of the TPS65982 you'll find that there are two dedicated mux channels one for USB 2.0 and another for SBU line. Depending on the configuration USB 2.0 can work even when system is in Alternate DP mode.

    2. Second, about the external SS MUX, since TPS65982 already has HS MUX inside, HD3SS460 is not applicable any more in this system, right? (since HD3SS460 also has low speed mux inside)

HD3SS460 is an Alternate mode mus to support HS, SS and DP switching. TPS65982 have HS mux but you still need HD3SS460 to route the SS and DP signals appropriately.

    3. I didn’t see any MUX like HD3SS3212 or HD3SS460 in TPS65982 EVM, only the switch bank S1, so how can the system perform signal routing in alternate mode specifically?

The TPS65982 EVM is focused on USB PD power demo and it doesn't deal with USB or display port signal (EVM doesn't even have these connectors) and hence we don't use a mux on the EVM.

    Thanks,

    Rahul
