TPS65983 source PDO peak current behavior

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65982

Hi Team,

May I know what would be the OCP current value when we set TPS65983 source PDO peak current as 130%. 150%, or 200%?

Do we follow the PD spec on debounce timing of peak current? If no any plan to follow the spec define?

Thanks

Sam

  • PDO Peak Current has the same behavior as it does on the TPS65982.

Since the TPS65982 is a PD Policy Enginer and power protection device and does not limit the current of a system to meet the PD spec, the allowed current will be a constant multiple of the PD contract negotiated.

If the negotiated contract is 20V, 3A:

    • 130% Current Limit = 1.3*3 = 3.9A
    • 150% Current Limit = 1.5*3 = 4.5A
    • 200% Current Limit = 2*3 = 6A

This applies to the PP_5V0,PP_HV, and PP_EXT paths as a Source and applies to the PP_EXT path as a sink when the SENSEP/N pins are connected correctly to measure current into the system.

The PDO Peak Current is active for as long as the PD contract is negotiated and has nothing to do with a de-bounce timer for in-rush current.

  • Hi Brian,
    Thanks
Do you know the reason we set over current value at the negotiated contract current, not the source PDO current?
The PD spec says "Sources shall implement output over current protection to prevent damage from output current that exceeds the
current handling capability of the Source", this seem just do protection at source PDO current should be ok

Some type C sink device in the market would have sink current a little over the RDO current so if we do protection at the negotiated contract current, we can not support this kind of device.
Understood that it might be the sink device issue, but If we can set the protection at the source PDO current, we will have better compatibility

Not asking team to modify but just curious about the purpose for this

    Thanks!
    Sam
