About Auto-Negotiation Restart

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DP83849IF

Hi,
My customer have a problem about link established. (They are using DP83849IF)
They are using the switch logic as below. if it switch, It sometimes doesn't work. Link LED is OFF, so LINK is not established.

I think this occur due to the instantaneous disconnect. Because it works after the following operation.
- After that, if the cable is pulled out and then the cable is re-inserted, Link is established. (Link LED=ON)
- After that, if powerdown is once run by setting POWER DOWN bit in BMCR register, Link is established. (Link LED=ON)

questions:
- When the connection is swiched , usually, the Auto-negotiation process is restarted. It doesn't seems to run the Auto-negotiation.
Do you know what this is happening?
- How many times does it take to understand the cable disconnect?

Best Regards,
Taka

  • Hi Taka,

What is this external switch you are using? Do you have a part number?
Also, when you enable the switch to allow for a connection, you see no Fast Link Pulses? (Auto-Negotiation pulses)
You see FLP after a power-down or cable disconnect though?

What is the link partner reporting? Does it report link in bypass mode, then no link right when switched, then link once auto-negotiation completes?

    Kind regards,
    Ross
