ESD/TVS Diodes - Application Notes confusion

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: STRIKE

Hi TI Team,

I found discrepancy in meaning how the ESD/TVS Discretre elements should be positioned , as well as tracks routed on the PCB board.

There are two documents:

1. SLVA680–February 2015, ESD Protection Layout Guide, Figure 7, page 5

2. SLVA796–June 2016, Effective System ESD Protection Guidelines for TPS254x USB Charging Port, Figure 3 Page 3

The AN SLVA680 states Case 1 as the Best, where AN SLVA796 states this case as Good.

Could you explain difference?

Br,

Josko

  • Hey Josko-

Thanks for the question, and sorry for any confusion the app notes may have caused!

The short answer to your question is that the best case scenario in SLVA680 is how you should place your TVS. For a TVS diode, the most important thing to improve protection is to have the TVS as close to the source of ESD as possible. When an ESD strike occurs, you want to minimize the impedance between the ESD strike and the TVS, while also increasing the impedance between the TVS and the protected IC. SLVA680 does a great job of describing why this is the case.

Thanks for your question, and I'll make sure to try to get the difference between the App Notes fixed! I'd be happy to answer any followup questions if you have any.

    Thanks,

    Alec

  • Hi Alec,

    Thank you for your reply.
Actually, my question has been aroused by the knowledge from AN SLVA680 because I read it two months ago and the content was reasonable.
