USB CHARGING PORT, USING TPS2543 OR TPS2546

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS2543, TPS2546

Good day to all,

We already have an USB charger design done and under production since 2015 using the USB charging controller IC TPS2543. I could see the TPS2546 is available and seem to have one addition charging protocol as the TPS2543 do have.

I am working on an improvement of our charger assembly, is it possible to have a better understanding of the D+/D- 1.2V difference of the TPS2546, like which type of device need that, is usage of the TPS2546 instead of the TPS2543 is preferable with some new device on the market today, etc?

I just want to make sure the new updated design of our USB charger (which we could not exceed 2.1 AMP), we will select the best available parts such a way to be compatible with most of the actual USB devices on the market.

Thanks

  • Hi Roger,

Generally speaking, TPS2546 will charge more of the newer devices because it was released after TPS2543. Here is a high level overview/comparison of the two devices with key differences highlighted.

TPS2546 supports 1.2V/1.2V charging for the newer Samsung phones and tablets. TPS2546 also has the CDP/SDP auto switch feature which allows many non-compliant phones to be charged. There is a better explanation of that in the TPS2546 datasheet.
