DP83822 EVM can't pass ESD test

My customer use DP83822 EVM for evaluation. They were found EVM can't pass ESD test.

IEC LEVLE 2(Contact 4kv) and IEC LEVEL 4(Contact 8kv) . LED will blink, that means IC been reset. Customer's request is can't be reset during test.

Test photo as below:

Any suggestion can be provided?

  • Hi Tan,

Have you ensured that the chassis is grounded (I.e. The standoff near the rj45 is grounded)? Also ensure that the system ground (i.e. Other 3 standoffs) are not directly tied to the same plane as the rj45. What supply are you using and link partner? I would not recommend a usb supply because a usb supply might not be able to handle the event. Have you tried connecting two 822 evms together to make sure it isn't the link partner?

Also, please clarify, a link drop (ie Led blink) is different from a phy reset. Please let me know if it is a link drop or reset.

    Kind regards,

    Ross

  • Hi Ross,

    Thanks for your comment.

I will check them with customer.

But just get a clarify from you, if this EVM also can pass ESD LEC LEVEL 4 testing?

I think if testing is a popular item when customer evaluating, a test guide line will make customer's process easier.

    Thanks!

  • Hi Tan,

We have done our own testing on this EVM up to 8kV (IEC61000-4-2). It appears to be a setup issue they are having because it does not mimic how we performed ours.

    Kind regards,
    Ross
