TPS65982 as UFP but no Data-connection

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65982, TPS65982-EVM, DP-EXPANSION-EVM

Hi to everyone,

I got stuck with my TPS65982 eval-board: after testing the two connected boards from power-supply-side, I want to to test the data-connection. Thus I used the TPS6598x Application Customization Tool to set up the Board as a UFP with "USB RP Enable" and "USB EP Enable" both set to true. Then I connected an USB-stick (using a short cable) to the pins of the EVM (5V and GND are connected to the board too). The Eval-Board is connected to a PCI-Express-Type-C port  at my PC. But I dont get any connection to the USB stick. However, my PC recognizes an "unspecified device" - identified as TPS65982. As far as I understand, this is ok, as "USB EP Enable" is set to "True".

Our general intention is to provide power for handheld devices (to charge the battery) and to exchange data between the handheld and the PC. In order to provide my configuration I took screenshots from the app customization tool, which I deem relevant. I took some looks into the forums, (e.g. https://e2e.ti.com/support/interface/usb/f/1008/p/488261/1762082#1762082, https://e2e.ti.com/support/interface/usb/f/1008/t/522604)

  • Hi Georg,

Where are you connecting the USB lines from the short cable? Are you connecting it on the ESD on the TPS65982-EVM? Or did you place resistors R68/67 and connect through J3 pins 19/20? When you connect a Type-A to Type-C cable with the USB-EP and billboard enabled the TPS65982 will billboard since a specific alternate mode was not entered. If you connect the USB lines between the connector and the TPS65982 you have two USB devices on the same lines.

If you want to verify the USB data that was disable the USB EP and Billboard and connect the USB lines to the J3 header.

  • Hi Georg,

I forgot to add we have our TPS65986 EVM and DP-EXPANSION-EVM if you would like to verify the data path.
