3. The 1394 standard itself can be bought from the IEEE. Most of the protocol specifications can be downloaded from the 1394 Trade Association's web site.

I will send you the datasheet by email.
Regarding the distance there is no a simple answer, it will depend on your design, are you talking about PCB trace length or cable length, I would say up to 10" of PCB trace, we have used these devices with 5m 1394b cables
