DP83867 - What is the maximum acceptable distance between the PHY and its associated magnetics for Gigabit Ethernet performance?

Posting for a customer:

I have been looking into the DP83867 10/100/1000 Ethernet PHY and have a question. Can you provide me with the maximum acceptable distance between the PHY and its associated magnetics for Gigabit Ethernet performance?

Thank you, Sean

  • Hi Sean,

Unfortunately we don't have a maximum length number for PHY-Magnetics distance. Could you tell me what is the distance on customer application? We have used board with 1-3 inches distance without any problem.

  • Aniruddha,

Our customer would like to move the transformer off their board because of its size. Can they put it 1 foot away from the PHY? 3 feet away? What can the PHY support assuming they take care of signal integrity appropriately?

    Thank you,

    Sean

  • Hi Sean,

Since this is not a specification controlled by IEEE, we don't have data about this parameter. Assuming layout is done to optimize signal integrity, we can use the recommendation that we provide on the MAC side and ask them to keep it up to 6inches.

I must point out that the received signal strength requirements on the MAC side and cable side of PHY are different. It is possible to have long microstrip traces on the cable side but that would result in decrease in the cable reach and increase susceptibility to immunity problems.
