TLK1201 compatibility with TLK2201B?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLK2201B, TLK2201BI

We have a design where we need legacy devices using a TLK1201/TLK1201A parts to communicate with a board using the TLK2201B. This is due to the TLK1201 being End of Life. I see that in the PCN notice, the TLK2201B is listed as a recommended replacement for the TLK1201, but the document states that the TLK2201B has, "Similar functionality but not equivalent."

1) Can these parts communicate with each other?

2) Is there anything special that needs to be done to get these parts working together?

Any help would be appreciated.

  • Hi Ben,

The TLK1201/1201A & TLK2201B share several features, but could you tell us what data rate are you planning to use? This is because the TLK1201A runs from 0.6 to 1.3Gbps, on the other hand the TLK2201B from 1 to 1.6Gbps.

  • The design runs at 1.0Gbps (100Mhz clock). We originally had the TLK2201BIRCP part in the design, but noticed that part starts at 1.2Gbps. We were able to resolve our issue by switching to a cleaner 100Mhz clock source and now the parts are locking to each other. If there are any other caveats or other changes that may need to be made for the parts to be compatible, please let us know.

    Thanks,

    Ben

  • Hi Ben,

The TLK2201B runs from 1 to 1.6Gbps and the TLK2201BI runs from 1.2 to 1.6Gbps. So, for your application I  suggest use the TLK2201B, where the data rate of 1.0Gbps was characterized in the lab, hence, we have data that guarantee the correct behavior on this data rate. Even, these devices could run at lower speeds that datasheet specifies, but we do not have characterization data to guarantee the best performance.
