MAX232: Doubt while want to use tx line as a voltage supply

Part Number: MAX232
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MAX3232,

What will be happened if I do as below theory?

Here we have connected load between TX line of the com port and ground. As we know that from the TX line, we get around -5V to -25V while device not sending any kind of data. In most of the systems generally two ICs are going to be used MAX232 and MAX3232. The short circuit current for the MAX232 is around 10mA and for MAX3232 it is around 35mA.

Let’s assume that the voltage on the TX line is -10V and if I connect the load of 1Kohm in between TX line and ground, at that time we can get approximately current (I) is -10mA but the voltage goes down and it will be around -7.6V.

We have checked the following conditions by connecting the different kind of loads.

Condition

Voltage across load (VL)

Current (I) in mA

At NO load

-10V

At 1Kohm load

-7.6V

-10

At 500ohm load

-6V

-20

At 333 ohm load

-4.8V

-30.03

From the above table, we can see that voltage across the load goes continuous down with decreasing the value of load resistor.

Now if I want to pull 16mA current, so for that I connect 560ohm resistor between TX line and ground. I would like to know that if I do like this, Can be there any kind of problem? If I use it for long term then, what kind of issues may occur?

  • Akshay,

Do you plan to do this on one channel or two channels?

My main concern is die temperature. I suggest checking the top of case temperature and power dissipation.

For power dissipation measure ICC, VOUT and IOUT.

    Pd = VCC * ICC - VOUT * IOUT = P[in] - P[Out]
