TUSB7340: TUSB7340 : Heating Issue and Reset upon heating

Part Number: TUSB7340

Hello,

I have implemented TUSB7340 for one of my design and I have been facing some heat related issues.

Under normal conditions, the chip stays at around  70 degrees Celcius and works fine. But a little load on the USB device and TUSB7340 starts to overheat and resets itself.

I have attached the screenshot of design for reference.

Your help and contribution will be valuable.

Thank you.

  • Hello,
Is the 70C ambient or case temperature?
It could be the thermal pad is not properly grounded, can you take some x-ray?
    What is the failure rate?
You have to place AC coupling capacitors on the SS_TX lines.
    Regards
  • Hello Elias,

    Thank you for the response.
    1. 70C is the case temperature. (these are old board temperatures. My new board gets even hotter and at faster rate)
    2. I can try and get the board X-rayed but can't promise (hobby project, low budget)
    3. Failure rate is 9/10.
    4. With next revision, I am placing AC coupling caps on SS_TX line.
4.1 Those caps will be placed close to the receiver, correct?
4.2 what's the specification of the capacitor? (voltage rating, tolerance, etc)

    Best regards,
    - Harshal
  • Hello,
The caps should be placed as close as possible to the USB connector.
The maximum size cap is 0402, C-packs are not allowed.
Regarding the heating issue, I would go after the thermal pad soldering.
