DP83849IF: Free Space Optic Application

Part Number: DP83849IF

Hi,

I am the Last Year Student in Politeknik Negeri Bandung - Indonesia, and I am going to do a Final Project about Free Space Optic (FSO) TCP/IP Communication using Laser Diode.

But I'm still confused when I want to use this DP83849IF IC Ethernet Transceiver and another components as the complementary (Magnetics RJ45, using MII as the connector between PHY and SerDes, etc.).

Q:

1. Is there any Reference Design for Realize FSO with 10/100 or even 1000 Mbps?

2. Is DP83849IF has internal SerDes?

Thanks a lot.

  • Hi Yusha,

I have not handled an FSO application using our Ethernet PHYs, but this does not mean it is not capable.

It seems like you would have to do some research on how to realize an FSO system. The DP83849IF device is designed to work with a 100base-fx SFP which uses laser diodes to transmit data across plastic fiber optical cable.

You would need to look at how the 100base-fx signaling can be compatible with an FSO transceiver to achieve a system like this.

    1. There are no reference designs for an FSO 10/100 system or 1000 that we have.

    2. The DP83849IF does have a SerDes that complies with 100base-fx

    Best Regards,
  • I'm so appreciate to your answer, but I still have another questions:

    1. Is there any optical driver or any optical transceiver components manufactured by Texas Instruments?

    2. Can you recommend for me which PHY that fulfill my requirement for FSO?

    3. Like you said, DP83849IF does have a SerDes for 100base-fx. Does it mean the DP83849IF able to drive an optical driver IC for driving Laser Diode?

  • Hi Yusha,

Yes, there are specific laser diode transceivers built to comply with 100base-fx. Please look up 100base-fx SFP.

An example is this Cisco device: www.cdw.com/.../719878.aspx

That Cisco fiber optical transceiver would be compatible with the DP83849IF SerDes.

    Best Regards,
