TPS65982: PD2.0/3.0 Over Temperature Protection

Part Number: TPS65982

Hi, Team,

Do TPS65982/83/82B support the Over Temperature Protection in PD2.0 or 3.0? If yes, is external thermistor required? or do the device integrate a thermistor in silicon?

Regards,
Nagata.

  • Hello,

The TPS65982/83/82B have integrated temperature sensors. If you look at section 6.18 of the TPS65982 datasheet, you can see the thermal sense accuracy. Section 6.23 of the TPS65982 datasheet discusses the thermal shutdown characteristics of the device.

    Thank you,
    Eric
  • Hi, Eric,

    Thank you for you support.
But PD2.0/3.0 specification requires to send "Hard Reset" message if Sink or Source detects over temperature protection. And it can renegotiate with Source/Sink after resuming default operation.

Does the thermal shutdown of TPS65982/83 meet the specification?

    Regards,
    Nagata.
  • Hi Nagata,

The 83 device allows the internal power paths (pp5v, pphv, ppcable) to go into an OCP condition until the device gets too hot. Some applications will require higher amounts of current for short bursts of time (i.e. hard drives starting up) and the device will allow this to happen without resetting. However, if the OCP condition stays on too long and the device gets too hot (thermal protection) the device will disconnect and go into error recovery. It will then renegotiate with source/sink before resuming default operation.

The implementation of the 82 is slightly different, the 82 will issue a hard reset for an OCP condition. For OTP (thermal), the device will issue a disconnect and go into error recovery. Both the 82 and 83 will send a status update to a configurable GPIO.

    Thank you,
    Eric
  • Hi, Eric,

Does the 82D have same protection as 82?

    Regards,

    Nagata.

  • Nagata,

The protection is based on the firmware image. Currently, the 82D has the same protection as the 83. However, we are working on releasing a new version of the tool that will contain new firmware images for the 82 and 82D. This will make the protection of the 83, 82, and 82D all the same.

    Thank you,
    Eric
