TPS65982: Direction through external FETs and reverse current blocking

Expert 1015 points
Part Number: TPS65982

I am using the TPS65982 external path in both a SINK and SOURCE mode. I have the sense connections made so that the ADC can read the SINK current (SENSE_P connected to the FET side of the 5mohm resistor and SENSE_N connected to PP_EXT), but it won't be able to read the source current. However, the data sheet says the current limit feature doesn't care about the direction (section 8.3.3.15), but there is some discussion about reverse current blocking and I'm wondering if that will work in both directions also. In section 8.3.3.13 it seems to indicate this by saying the VBUS and SENSEP monitors the voltage.

Thanks,
W

  • Hey Warren,

The TPS65982 can only support reading the Sink current OR the Source current based on the configuration of SENSE_P and SENSE_N with relation to the 5mohm resistor. The device does not support reading Sink and Source current simultaneously.

    Thank you,
    Eric
  • The current limit works in both directions without regard to the resistor connection according to the section referenced above, but does the reverse current blocking work with the sense resistors tied one way?
