DP83867E: Question of IDLE ERROR COUNTER

Part Number: DP83867E

Hi team,

What does IDLE ERROR COUNTER (Address=0x000A[7:0]) in DP83867mean? Does the counter work when link is down?

-. Is it related to MDI issue (between RJ45 and PHY), or MII issue (between PHY and SoC)? Otherwise, both?

-. At a test for link down in MDI line, it seems that the error is not recognized. Is it normal behavior?

Thanks,

Best Regards,

Sam Lee

  • Hi Sam,

It is related to idle symbols on the MDI. The MDI needs to be connected to the link partner, and link must be active, before idle symbols are exchanged.

When you disconnect a link, you should get burst of idle errors. The idle error count should be clear on read, but the DP83867 doesn't latch the count properly. A read immediately after the disconnect event should show idle errors.

    Best Regards,
