TCAN1042-Q1: TCAN1042-Q1 ISO11898 Specification

Part Number: TCAN1042-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TCAN1051, TCAN1051-Q1

Hi,

I would like you to confirm which specification is compliant on TCAN1142-Q1.

According to datasheet, it seems that TCAN1142-Q1 is compliant only ISO11898-2.

However, on the other hand, there are following information on ESP document.

•The TCAN1042 and TCAN1051 are high speed CAN transceivers capable of supporting both classical CAN as well as CAN FD at rates up to 5 Mbps. They meet all the requirements of the ISO 11898-2:2016 and ISO 11898-5:2007 physical layer standards.
So could you please confirm which information is correct ?
Best Regards,
Machida
  • Machida-san,

The TCAN1042 is compliant to both ISO 11898-2:2016 and ISO 11898-5:2007. We are working on a datasheet update now to include that information and make it more clear. The only reason that it is not in the current datasheet is that the 2016 update of ISO 11898-2 expanded its scope to implement the extra requirements that were previously introduced in ISO 11898-5.

  • Hi Max-san,

    Thank you for your reply.

I understood that TCAN1042 is compliant to both ISO11898-2 and 11898-5.

BTW, the big difference b/w TCAN1042 and TCAN1051 is that TCAN1051 is NOT compliant ISo11898-5, right ?

    Best Regards,

    Machida

  • Machida-san,

Sorry for the long delay - I have been out of the office. TCAN1051 is compliant to ISO 11898-5, it just does not implement the wake-on-CAN feature. This is an optional portion of the 11898-5 standard.

  • Hi Max-san,
    Thank you for your reply.

    >TCAN1051 is compliant to ISO 11898-5,

Since there is no description about "ISO 11898-5" in  datasheet, so I recognized this is not compliant to 11898-5.

And to incorporate similar function of ISO11898-5, TCAN1051-Q1 have "silent mode" instead of "standby mode"....

Since both TCAN1042 and TCAN1051 are compliant to ISO11898-5, could you please tell me why pin name and function name are different b/w TCAN1042("STB" pin and "standby mode") and TCAN1051("S" pin and "silent mode") ?

    Best Regards,

    Machida

  • Machida-san,

Sorry for the confusion. TCAN1042's standby mode meets the requirements of the low-power mode specified in ISO 11898-5. The TCAN1051's silent mode does not meet these requirements, but the device is compliant to the specifications in ISO 11898-5 that cover a transceiver operating in normal mode.

Both devices' datasheets will mention ISO 11898-5:2007 as well as ISO 11898-2:2016 in the next datasheet revision.
