DP83848I: not working with 64bit Window 7, only works with Windows XP

Part Number: DP83848I

Hi all,

I recently conducted the troubleshooting on one of our boards built two years ago. The problem is, it is working fine with Window XP (setting up the Ethernet connection and communication), but not working with 64 Window 7 (showing local network disconnected)

I am curious if this is because of the old DP83848I chip ( serial no:  VM87AC  /   DP83848VV  / VBI ) loaded with obsolete firmware.

BTW, I have another built board with same Chip type and different serial number ( serial no:  4CW0667/   DP83848VV  / VBI ), working fine.

Please feel free to provide any suggestions. Thank you in advance.

  • Hello Guanbo,

Did something change between the old board and new board? Schematic/Layout/BOM?
I am assuming that the XP and Win7 are on to different computers. Did you check the old and new chip with the same set of computers?

  • As far as I can tell, there is no change on schematic and layout. That is why confused me.

I have two computers, one has old XP operating system, the other has window 7.

The old board only works with XP computer; With window 7, it showed "disconnected"

The new board works for both XP and Window 7.

  • Hello Guanbo,

Do all your old boards show problems when connection to a Win 7 computer? I am trying to check if this is a isolated problem on one old board or if its across multiple boards. Would you be able to do A-B-A swap test on the boards?

    A-B-A Swap Test:
    1. Remove problem DP83848 device and put it on a known good board. Test for link.
    2. Remove problem DP83848 device from known good board and put it back on the original board. Test for link

  • Sorry to reply you late. So far I only have one old board, and a couple of new boards (all schematics looks same, except the DP83848 chip in different SN). I did not replace the DP83848 chip yet. that would be my last step.

The weird thing of this old board is, it is working perfect with Window XP. But when connecting with a Window 7 computer, it shows "Ethernet disconnect, link disconnected". LED SPD is ON, yellow, LED ACT and LED LINK were OFF.

I am checking some pins on the chip,

    PWR_DOWN (pin 7) : 3.3v

    AVD33 (pin22), IOVDD33(pin32, 48) : 3.3v

    X1 (pin 34) - 25 Mhz as expected.

    PIN 18, 23, 37 (PFBIN1, PFBIN2, PFBOUT): 1.75v
    PIN 22, 32, 48: 3.3V

Thanks again for your comments and continuing help!
