RTOS/TPS65982: TPS65982 PD short protection behavior

Part Number: TPS65982

Tool/software: TI-RTOS

Hi Sir

I have a question about TPS65982 PD short protection behavior.

When VBUS short to GND at TPS65982

Q1. Has it any protects behavior?

Q2. As Q1, If yes,  what is trig protection condition?

Q3. If TPS65982 be uesd by protection status, how return to normal status?

Q4. If we can't modify TPS65982 from protected status to normal status. What cause is it?

Thank you for your great support.

  • Hi Hugo,

    1. When VBUS shorts to GND, the TPS65982 will trigger an OCP event on VBUS and disconnect the Type-C port.

    2. When VBUS is shorted to ground, the port will disconnect after about 30uS due to the current spike seen by the PD controller. The image below highlights this behavior:

    3. After the Reset event occurred on the port, the PD controller will try to re-negotiate a PD contract. If the short is cleared, it will then continue normal operation. If the short is still there, it will repeat the same behavior for a certain number of cycles before performing a hard reset.

    4. TPS65982 will return to normal status once the short is cleared. Power cycling the device will always clear these flags as well.

    Thank you,

    Eric
