For almost all applications we stay with the default Figure of Merit (FOM). The default setting uses both HEO an VEO (horizontal and vertical eye opening) data to determine the optimum DF111 equalization setting. This approach works well for FR4 and twin-axial copper cable applications. As the channel complexity increases, it is possible that a FOM biased in the horizontal or vertical direction could improve the adaptive equalization resulting in a more optimum eye opening.
