AM26C31: Short Circuit Portection

Part Number: AM26C31

Hi Team:

Could you help me to check whether the AM26C31QDR output short together, our chip will proetct?

It means whether our chip will have over current protection? Thanks.

  • Hi Derek,

The current that this device's driver will provide during a short-circuit condition is 170 mA. This is specified under the condition that the output voltage is shorted to 0 V since that would be an extreme case; shorting the two halves of the differential signal together will produce similar results (although with slightly lower currents).

  • Hi Max:

So my understand is that we don't have short circuit protection, right?

  • Hi Derek,

It depends on what kind of protection is needed. Typically short circuit protection for a differential transceiver means that the driver output is current-limited. The maximum short-circuit current specified by RS-422 is 150 mA, so the AM26C31Q is a little bit beyond this due to the wide temperature range supported. (The "C" and "I" versions comply to the 150 mA maximum.)

Is there something else you had in mind for short circuit protection?
