TPS65982: Dual Port Notebook Application

Part Number: TPS65982

Hi,

If 2 TPS65982 are used for dual port notebook application, how does the device work in dead battery situation?

The secondary 982 has to receive firmware (application code) from the primary one through UART, but if type-C source is connected to the secondary, then it cannot load the app code because the primary 982 is off.

What is the best way to solve this problem? And if you have reference design for dual port notebook with 982, plase send it to me or let me know the link.

Best regards,

Sean Moon

  • Hi Sean,

The TPS65982 has boot code programmed into ROM that is permanently on the device. Upon plugging a source into the secondary port, an implicit 5V contract will be negotiated. the TPS65982 will then close the internal switch to deliver power to the primary device. Once the primary device has power, the primary will first load it's app config off of the flash. The primary will then boot the secondary over UART. The secondary will then renegotiate to a PD contract if higher voltages are provided by the attached source.

    Thank you,
    Eric
  • Hi Eric,

    Thanks for your reply.

My customer designed like below block diagram. The key point is to power up the primary when a souce is connected to the secondary under dead battery condition. But the problem is that the VIN voltage will drop to 2.6V after passing the diodes. They can adjust the output voltage of LDO to 4.0V but system 3.3V cannot be adjusted.

Do you have any good idea to solve this problem?
