What's the benefit if using multiple chip solution instead of one chip solution?

Can this referece design also support 422?

SHH,

Yes, this reference design supports RS-422. (Most RS-485 transceivers can be used for RS-422 as well, since in general RS-485 requirements are more strict.) The advantages of a multi-chip solution are flexibility in channel configurations, device selections, and in placement of the devices on a PCB. There may be some cost advantages as well depending on the specific devices selected.

SHH,

Yes, this design allows the RS-422/485 and RS-232 to share the same signal lines, meaning that extra conductors are not needed and a single DB-9 can be used.

I have attached the PCB files. The advantages of this multi-chip implementation are that it gives more flexibility in RS-232/RS-485 component selection (in case certain performance criteria like ESD robustness, high-voltage immunity, etc. are needed) and in PCB design (since the different devices can be placed to that routing is simple). Please let me know if you need anything else.
