DP83867IRPAP-EVM: Rebuild a PHY - MAC connection

Part Number: DP83867IRPAP-EVM

Hello,

I would like to build a prototype of a PHY - MAC connection with some pins (RX or TX) cut in order to try to establish an unidirectionnal Ethernet connection. The connection between PHY and MAC is should be a GMII or RGMII preferably. I saw these products of yours :

DP83867ERGZ SGMII 1000M/100M/10M Ethernet PHY Evaluation Module
DP83867ERGZ RGMII 1000M/100M/10M Ethernet PHY Evaluation Module
DP83867IRPAP-EVM 1000M/100M/10M Ethernet PHY Evaluation Module

I am particulary interested in the last one that provides both RGMII and GMII connection. However, do you provide single board computers, with a MAC and a GMII/RGMII interface, and without a PHY ? This would permit me to link it with the PHY EVM.

Plus, as I plan to cut the RX wire between MAC and PHY, I would like to know if there is a protocol between the two devices that allow them to know the capabilities of each other, like an auto negociation protocol. Indeed, I saw on a forum that a MAC with MII and GMII capabilities would detect to which cable it is connected.
If you had this information too this would be nice.

Thank you!

  • Hello Pierre,

We have a Industrial Communications Engine board which uses DP83867IR-PAP: www.ti.com/.../k2gice
We also have a TI reference design that uses the DP83867IR-PAP: www.ti.com/.../TIDA-00204

The Reference design is not available for sale but the design files are on the web. The ICE board can be purchased. It looks like you want to connect a DP83867IRPAP EVM to a MAC system using a connector. These boards have DP83867IRPAP on board directly connected to the PHY.

For MII and GMII, there is no autonegotiation between the MAC and the PHY. The clock frequency for Transmit and Receive will change based on link speed so that the data is sampled accurately.
