DP83849I: SFP Media Converter using DP83849IVS evaluation board

Part Number: DP83849I

We are currently interested in using the DP83849IF for a media converter application using SFP modules.

We have in our possession an evaluation board for the DP83849I.  My question is, can this board be converted to work with the 83849IF IC if the IC is removed from the evaluation board and replaced with a DP83489IF and adapting an SFP connector to the Port B fiber module footprint?  If this can be done, are there any other component changes which would have to be done to the board besides connecting the optical interface and disconnecting the copper interface on Port B?

  • Hi Newbie,

Yes, you can replace the DP83849I on the EVM with the DP83849IF and place an SFP on the board.

Use the DP83849IF EVM schematics to look at the components you must change, sheet 5 has notes of particular help: www.ti.com/.../snlr002.pdf

    Best Regards,
  • I have made the changes as indicated on sheet 5 of the schematic. Is there any special consideration for the SD pin of the SFP module? On the board the line is terminated with a 130/80 ohm resistor combination which would be for use with a 1x9 fiber module. The SFP module has an SD line which is an open collector output. I assume that the 130/80 ohm resistor combination would be replaced by a pull up resistor. Is that correct?
