MAX3232: about ESD function of Dout pin (RS-232 BUS)

Part Number: MAX3232

Hi all,

I would like to know where the ESD cell of Dout (Pin 7 or Pin 14) is located.
According to the datasheet,  RIN and DOUT are RS232 pins with 15kV ESD protection.

The figure below is the result of the DOUT pin observed by the curve tracer.

 Is this the correct waveform?

Thanks and regards,

Toshi

  • Hi Toshi,

What you got from the curve tracer looks right to me. I'm not sure what your test condition was. But nominally the output resistance of the driver is 10MOhm. The ESD cell should not be triggered in normal operation region. In MAX3232, the abs max of Dout pins are from -13V to 13V. If you sweep to higher voltage on the curve tracer, I think you will see much higher current drawn by the device. Please let me know if you have other questions.

    Regards,
