TPS65986EVM: TPS65986EVM Default setting for UFP

Part Number: TPS65986EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: HD3SS460, TEST2, TPS65982

HI,

   I do some tests with my design board and TPS65986EVM+HD3SS460 extension Board. These test and result listed blow,

- Board 1 : TPS65986EVM + HD3SS460 extension Board

- Board 2 : similar the Board1 but the GPIO setting is different (for DFP)

- Board 3: similar the Board 1 t the GPIO setting is the same (for UFP)

- Using  "TPS6598x Configuration Tool"  to get firmware of TPS65986

- Application : DFP (source for DP alt mode) send DP video and UFP (sink for DP alt mode) receive DP video

- Firmware 1: TPS65986 default firmware (burn form TPS6598x configuration tool)

- Firmware 2: By slva844a.pdf  to use TPS6598x configuration tool to set and get firmware.( for DFP) only GPIO setting is set by board 2 circuit.

- Firmware 3: By slva844a.pdf  to use TPS6598x configuration tool to set and get firmware.( for UFP).

Test1: DP Alt. mode function is good. (PASS)

   Board 2(Firmware 2) --> DP video --> Board 1(Firmware 1, default) .

Test2: DP Alt. mode function is NG. (Fault)

   Board 2(Firmware 2) --> DP video --> Board 1(Firmware 3) .

Test3: DP Alt. mode function is good. (PASS)

   Board 1(Firmware 1, default) --> DP video --> Board 3(Firmware 3) .

Test4: DP Alt. mode function is NG. (Fault)

   Board 1(Firmware 1, default) --> DP video --> Board 3(Firmware 1, default) .

Test5: DP Alt. mode function is NG. (Fault)

   Board 2(Firmware 2) --> DP video --> Board 3(Firmware 3) .

Test6: DP Alt. mode function is good. (PASS)

   Board 2(Firmware 2) --> DP video --> Board 3(Firmware 1) .

Tes7: DP Alt. mode function is good. (PASS)

   Others PC (with USB-C) --> DP video --> Board 3(Firmware 3) .

Tes8: DP Alt. mode function is good. (PASS)

   Board 2(Firmware 2) --> DP video --> USB-C to DP dongle .

My question is which parameters should be changed when using TPS6598x configuration tool?  What is the setting of default firmware of TPS65986 EVM? Or in my application what setting should be concerned?

In Test 7 and Test 8 , onlly one device isn't TI chip, it seems good. why?

It seems only one device using slv844a.pdf to set firmware , the other is default EVM firmware. it seems still good. why?

  • the main chip of Board 2 is TPS65982, and Board 3 is TPS65986
  • Hi Mentor,

    You have some pretty in depth and conflicting test results: since Test 1 was a pass then we will start with test 2 for initial discussion...Id like to first note that the GPIO mapping that maps AMSEL, USB3/DP event, and CC orientation are mapped to different GPIO with x82 vs x86 (they are not the same)...

    **Are you able to just onlyuse two x86 or two x82?

    -82 has TBT and external power path control and x86 does not.

    From your info above:

     -basically x82 and x86 can only pass DP (in any test setup) if configured with the right GPIO mapping in FW?

    For your test setup:

    -are you using a DP monitor as your DP sink? are you using a Type-C laptop as your DP source?

    -are you trying for 2 lane DP or 4 lane DP?

    -Can you send me your FW1, FW2 and FW3

    you also mention default FW: do you mean default template?

    If you want to revert to the default setting (recovery FW) you can go to the app config tool > Device (at the top) > Re-Flash EVM Firmware (recovery)

    -this recovery FW is the out the box FW which will allow configID (dipswitch) functionality.

    ___________

    As an action, I will do ahead and try to get the below test setup to pass

    Test2: DP Alt. mode function is NG. (Fault)

       Board 2(Firmware 2) --> DP video --> Board 1(Firmware 3).

    Please also be aware that I will be out of office till Thursday of next week so my responses will be delayed.

    Thanks

  • Hi Jeff,

    1. Board 1(as UFP)  use DP monitor as DP sink. Board 3 is pass the DP video to MCDP2850.

    2. My DP source :

       (A) Board 2 is a mainboard, it's DP source should be from CPU.

       (B) When Board 1 as DFP, it's DP source is DP pattern generator.

    3. I try the below video resolution :

       - 4k2k/30p

      - 4k2k/60p (it should be 4 lane)

      - 1080p

    4. the blow the default FW I mentioned.

       * app config tool > Device (at the top) > Re-Flash EVM Firmware (recovery)

    5. Could you give your E-mail? I'd like to send you the FW and schematic (GPIO) of Board 2.

  • Hi Mentor,

    Sounds good I am back and will begin testing your case. My email is jeff.mueller@TI.com

    Thanks

  • Hi Mentor,

    I am closing this thread because it has been taken offline.
