TPS65981: Can be used to power up a portable speaker?

Genius 5355 points
Part Number: TPS65981
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS25740B

Hi Support,

Please advise if the TPS65981 can be used to power up a portable speaker just like AC/DC adaptor.

The portable speaker may or may not have internal battery.

Does not need the USB interface to PC. Just need the USB Power delivery portion.

Considering TPS65981 but need single function, preferably it works without external MCU or serial Flash for chip configuration.

Thanks.

  • Hi Ikon,

The TPS65981 can be used to handle the power delivery section of your design. However, the TPS65981 needs to have an external SPI Flash chip on the board to load configuration from. Without the SPI Flash, the TPS65981 will not boot.

    Thank you,
    Eric
  • Hi Ikon,

If you are only interested in USB Power Delivery then the TPS25740B can perform that job without the need for serial flash chip config. The TPS25740B DFP PD controller that uses a resistive divider circuitry to implement the default voltage setting of 5V,9V,15V,20V or adjusted for 5V,9V,12V,15V.

  • Hi Jimmy,

Yes. They need something similar but this chip is for power source side. Portable speaker is on power ‘sink’ side.

    Any other recommendation?

    Thanks.

  • Hi Ikon,

Thanks for the clarification. With that said, I don't think there are any other products that I am aware of that implements simple state machine process for a USB PD UFP application.

If you are interested in making a power source then the TPS25740B would be a good choice. Otherwise for power sink, I would also agree with Eric that the TPS65981 would be able to satisfy your intended application.
