TPS65982: Programming new chip from I2C (on a PC)

Hi,

I have been reviewing all the firmware documentation on this chip but cannot determine if I can actually program a new chip over I2C. I can program over SPI using the Aardvark programmer and read registers over I2C but I have not been successful programming the chip over I2C using Snapshot or the Utilities GUI. Is there some other mechanism in which I can program a TPS6598x chip from my PC using the Aardvark programmer and I2C?

Note: I am already familiar with programming the device over I2C using another embedded controller (https://e2e.ti.com/support/interface/usb/f/1008/t/618608?tisearch=e2e-quicksearch&keymatch=tps65982%20program%20i2c

Hi Ari,

You cannot program a new chip over I2C. A new TPS65982 device will always need to load the application code from the external SPI Flash chip. Once the application code has been loaded, you can change some of the configuration registers over I2C using an embedded controller or an Aardvark. All of the registers are listed in the Host Interface Technical Reference Manual and it lists which registers can be rewritten during run-time.

Hi,

slva783a implies that you can program the flash via I2C using the embedded controller. Can it only update the flash (i.e. low region only) or program it from an empty state?

Hi Ari,

You are correct, the EC would only be able to update the low region (not the flash). With that being said, you cannot program the TPS65982 from an empty state over I2C.

Hi Ari,

I apologize for the confusion, but the TPS65982 would be able to rewrite the data on the flash using the FLwd 4CC command. This process is discussed in more detail in the application note for updating the TPS65982 over I2C. However, the device needs to be booted for this command to work. So you would need to have a flash that already has a pre-existing image on it that will allow the TPS65982 to boot.

Hi Eric,

When you say "the device needs to be booted for this command to work" do you mean it needs to be in APP mode versus BOOT mode?

That's correct, the device needs to be in APP mode for the 4CC Commands to work.
