DP83849I: How manageable DP83849I is?

I noticed that DP83849I has two MII/RMII ports assigned to channels A and B, the Microcontroller used on my board has a single MII/ RMII interface. I noticed that DP83849I has Flexible MII port assignment functionality, but just not sure how flexible/ manageable it is. I want to make sure that ports/ data could be managed by the MCU preventing any possible loops. I also want to make sure we could turn off/ on any of the ports A and B by the MCU. Can you please verify the functionality exists?

Hello,

DP83849IF has two power down pins, one each for port A and B. They can be individually powered down when not in use. It is also mentioned in the datasheet in section 6.2.4.

The question specifically is:

-what is the difference between a managed switch and flexible one?

DP83849I has flexible MII ports, but what is the difference between this switch and a manageable one? are they the same or if there are differences what are they?

Hello Ali,

DP83849I is a dual port PHY and not a switch. So comparing it to a managed switch would not be correct. The flexible port functionality of DP83849I allows used to connect any of available MAC ports to any of the MDI ports. Unused ports can be powered down individually.
