I bought two pieces of DP83640T-EVK demo boards. I saw the document(snla098a AN-1728 IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol Time Synchronization Performance page4) found that it seems need another ALP baseband boards to integrate these two boards(DP83640T-EVK) to test IEEE1588 functions. And, ALP baseband board is not available at TI now. So, here is my question : if I want to test DP83640T-EVK demo boards, I have to develop a platform like ALP baseband board which EPL could loaded?

Hello,

Yes, a MAC will be needed to run the same test that are listed in the App note.

Is there any second source? Or, I have to develop this platform by myself?

Hello,

Unfortunately, there are no alternative sources to buy the ALP board. So you will have to develop the platform. Another option is to check if similar software can be developed on another FPGA based reference design. This will eliminate the need to design a new hardware. For creating software, you can use reference material in the Tools and Software section of the product page: http://www.ti.com/product/DP83640/toolssoftware

I recently used 2 MicroZed Zynq boards for that purpose (other Zynq SOM boards should work as well).

The Zynq has 2 Ethernet controllers on chip. The MicroZed board by default brings out the MII signals of one of them on pins controlled by the ARM section of the Zynq, the other is unused. But the MII signals can be redirected to the FPGA section of the chip. In the FPGFA section, the MII signals can be connected to generic IO pins which are accessible on a header. (http://zedboard.org/content/redirecting-peripherals-mio-emio). I then handwired those header pins to the MII pins on the DP83640T-EVK.

For the software, I run Linux on the ARM section of the Zynq. The current kernel has support for the DP83640 as an Ethernet PHY as well as for its PTP functions. As a novice in kernels etc, it took me some time to get it all configured, but for someone familiar with kernel compilation, it should not be a big effort. HW cost is 2x ~$200 for the Zynq boards.
