TPS65981EVM: Charging Asus laptop using EVM

We received the TPS65981 ,

We have connected the 20V input 3A source to the input barrel jack

We did the required changes in the J6

However when we connect our 20V Asus laptop which demands around 1.5 A

We see the Vbus waveform which rises to 20V dipping in between

I have attached the waveforms

The yellow waveform is the V bus

The green is the Sys Bus .

Can you please help us understand what might be going wrong

The laptop intermittently shows charging

However the current drawn from the DC supply is hardly 0.01 A

Hello Eric ,

We haven't loaded any PJT file , on to the EVM

We have taken the EVM as it is and have done the following config of the switch .

We have connected an Asus laptop on the Type c port side

We have connected 20V 3A supply on the input barell jack side

Hi Shreenidhi,

I have tried the TPS65981-EVM here with that default configuration on a few different Type-C laptops and they all charge. Can you download the latest version of the TPS6598x application customization tool and Re-Flash the EVM Firmware?
It is possible that the EVM you have has an old FW image on it.

Hi Shreenidhi,

You can download the tool from the following link: www.ti.com/.../tps6598x-config
Once you have installed it, you need to connect the power supply to the TPS65981-EVM and connect the TPS65981 to your PC with a micro USB cable. Then in the tool, you need to click on Device --> Re-Flash EVM Firmware (Recovery). Next, make sure you select FTDI as the USB to SPI Adapter, select the TPS65981-EVM flash image and click OK. The tool will let you know once the flash update has completed.

Thank you Eric ,

I will definitely re flash the EVM

However looking at the 20V waveform dipping and rebuilding can some thing be commented on the CC line communication

If we still face the issue which is the best way to debug this

Can you send us a image of the EVM board as well.

Have we configured the switches correctly

Hi Shreenidhi,

It may be something strange that the laptop is doing. I have tested the latest FW on the TPS65981-EVM with various laptops here locally and have not seen any issues charging them.

We used the PMP11451
It charges the laptop well
PMP11451 uses PD type C

Hi Eric,

We tried flashing the latest FW on the TPS65981, but that didn't change anything. We observed similar results.

Below is the behavior of TPS board, which we tested last Friday,

The firmware was upgraded using the GUI TPS config tool.

The board was powered using a DC supply with 20V and 2.25A input.

On connecting the board to Asus Zenbook3 laptop, the charging was not happening. We could see all the three lights (CTL0,1,2) blinking. The VBUS test point fluctuated between 0,5 and 20V.

We tried charging the Nexus 6P phone which is TypeC PD complaint. Here as well, the charging icon is coming but after few seconds, the current drawn by the phone goes down to 0A.

When we connect TPS to Asus Zenbook 2, the CC lines fluctuate between 0 and 5V. When we connect to Nexus 6p, the CC lines are in steadystate.

When we connected the expansion board to TPS, the Asus laptop was able to detect the USB pendrive.

Here are the screenshots. The first one is for the Asus Zenbook, and the second one is for the Nexus 6P phone. Yellow is VBUS, green and red are CC1 and CC2.

Hi Avinash,

Do you have a PD analyzer available to read the PD communication between the two devices? This would give us a better idea of what is happening in the failing cases. Can you also confirm the jumper configuration on J6? The top jumper closest to the barrel jack should be to the right, the one below that should be to the left.
Also, can you enter debug mode in the TPS6598x Application Customization tool and read back the PD Status Register? To do this, Click on the Debug tab --> Debug Mode. Once the device connects, click on Device 1, Port 0 and then Debug Registers. In the Debug Registers you will find PD Status. When reading that register, what do you see in "Soft Reset Details" and "Hard Reset Details"?

Hi Shreenidh,

It looks like you have grounded the Barrel Jack input with the wire you soldered. This may have damaged the board. Can you retry the test with the wire removed?

Hello eric ,
the 2 pink wires are different wires and are coming from my lab voltage source ,

i have connected 20V @ 3A power supply using 2 wires .
i believe its not gnd,
as you can see in the waveform the Vbus does occasionally rise to 20V .
