DP83816: Compliance test (Ask Again)

Part Number: DP83816
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DP83847,

Hello,

I checked the register of the DP83847 and application note.

I understood how to configure for the compliance testing roughly.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

// software reset (clear register)

// program DUT to 100Base-TX mode

// program DUT to Pseudo Random bit sequence output

// digital reset (doesn't clear register)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I checked the register of the DP83816, have some questions.

address 0000h bit 8 : Reset

address 0080h bit 15:Reset

Q1) Which should I use above two address for software reset?

address 0080h bit 13 : 100Mb/s

address 0080h bit 8   : Full duplex operate

address 00E4h bit 11 : PSR15

address 00E4h bit 9   : BIST start

Q2) Does it need digital reset? If the answer 'yes', which address should I configure?

Q3) Although the DP83816 have PCI Media Access Control,

does it need to program DUT to Forced MDI or MDIX mode?

Best Regards,

Naoki Aoyama

  • Hi Naoki-san,

Q1) Which should I use above two address for software reset?
address 0000h bit 8 : Reset should be used. This does not clear the registers.

Q2) Does it need digital reset? If the answer 'yes', which address should I configure?
BIST start of the PHY does not require digital reset

Q3) Although the DP83816 have PCI Media Access Control
To ensure the output BIST, I would suggest forcing MDI or MDIX depending on which pins you are testing for compliance.

  • Hi Rob,

    Thank you for your reply.
Could you tell me how to configure the DUT to Forced MDI mode?
Is it possible to configure the DUT to Forced MDI mode by 1kohm pull down the
    Pin 133 (MD1/CFGDISN)?

    Best Regards,

  • Hi Naoki-san,

The CFGDISN pin only stops the DP83816 from loading its configuration from EEPROM at start up. This would mean the device is in default state when it powers up.

The DP83847 and DP83816 do not support auto-mdix. The DP83816 is always in MDI mode.
