I have bought 2x TPS65982-EVM and 1x Totalphase Aardvark to be able to do the following testing.

I am planning to test the different supported PD profiles from several USB type-C notebook power supplies.

So I would like to know how to configure/program the TPS65982-EVM to emulate every possible PD profile (20V/15V/14,5V/12V/9V/5V)

So prefferably I am looking for a solution with only 1 Firmware that I need to program on the TPS65982-EVM and to be able to set the different PD profiles using switches or the onboard S1 dip switches. Can anyone help me to set this firmware accordingly? Thank you in advance

Hi Mitch,

Welcome to e2e! Once you download the Customization tool (Customization tool user guide here: http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/slvuar8a/slvuar8a.pdf), you can use the GUI to re-flash the original boot code to use the S1 switch bank for different voltage/current source and sink values.

In order to re-flash the original boot code, click on "Device" ==> "Re-Flash EVM Firmware (Recovery)"

Make sure to power cycle after the firmware is uploaded and completed. Now onto the fun stuff. The Switch bank is only set for 5, 12, and 20V. I recommend taking a look at the TPS65982EVM user's guide (http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/slvuaf8c/slvuaf8c.pdf for more info on each switch setting. Take a look at Table 2 on page 13 for the S1 logic table.

If you would like to set the source and sink voltages different than 5V, 12V, and 20V, I recommend customizing the build you would like and flash it onto the board. I hope this helps :-)

Dear all,

Thank you for your response. however I know I can program a firmware onto the EVM but I am quite new at this I have tried to make a firmware using the customisation tool but unfortunately I do not have the required knowledge on how to determine which options I should use in the custumisation tool to get the correct settings (yes I am new at this noob). I would appreciate it if someone could point me in the good direction on how to build my first firmware for the EVM. I tried to follow the instructions in this document: SLVA795A but got stuck on 2.4 step 3 I cannot find the suggested tpl file.

Hi Mitchel,

Our template naming has changed since the release of the document that you are looking at. For a thunderbolt system, you can use the TPS65982_Thunderbolt_DRP_Host_Advanced_3_08.tpl instead of the tpl file listed in that document.

Dear Eric,

Thank you for your suggestion of the tpl file. I will start from this template. And check if I can figure out which settings I need to modify to add the different PD profiles to the firmware.

Ok got the PD profiles working 1 firmware per profile. Now I wish to know how to set the EVM to switch +1 between the PD profiles by pressing a button (connected to J2 or J3) or by changing the S1 settings This way I can make 1 firmware to switch between the profiles.

I now have a different additional issue, I am no longer able to program to the EVM anymore even if I try to re-flash the factory firmware. It mentions "Erasing device" and further nothing happens. I susscesfully programmed the same device several times now using the same computer and now it no longer works. Also a second TPS65982-EVM (that has not been used yet I am no longer able to program. I checked the wiring several times at it is connected correctly. The EVM is also powered with the DELL notebook charger.

UPDATE: Also on a different PC I got this issue

Dear Eric,

No I do not get any errors during programming it keeps showing "Erasing device" for hours. When I press abort I get the message the software is not responding.

When I use the Utilities GUI I am able to flash the firmware using the option "Host Interface FW Update" using the low region flash. but not when I try to use the "Full flash"

I'm sorry you're having issues with using the Aardvark, can you confirm that you have followed all steps in section 3 of the Application Customization Tool User's Guide? Section 3 covers using the Aardvark adapter: www.ti.com/.../slvuar8a.pdf

Dear Eric,

Yes I did foloow the instructions of section 3. And it was working perfectly I have succesfully updated the software several times withthis configuration and same PC even on the day it suddenly did not work anymore I have been able to program the device using the Application Customisation tool. and some point I was no longer able to program it anymore. Later I discovered that when i Use the low region programming using the TPS6598x utilities GUI I am still able to program it (Unfortunately at a much slower speed. so the interface is working but for some reason not the Application customisation tool .

Hi Mitchel,

These results are quite strange, this is not something I have seen before with the EVM. Can you confirm of the LDO_3V3 voltage is present on the SPI-flash chip on the board? Pin 8 would be the LDO_3V3 voltage.
Also, Can you try to probe the SPI lines on the EVM?

Hi Mitchel,

If you look at page 29 of the EVM User's Guide: www.ti.com/.../slvuaf8c.pdf
Device U1 is the SPI Flash, from there you can probe the SPI lines as well as the LDO_3V3 lines.

I now downloaded the Totalfase flash center and I get the message the target device is not powered. I checked and it is powered through the DELL power adapter I even tried a second DELL power adapter but I still get the message the target is not powered.

Hi Mitchel,

Apologies for the delay in response. Is it possible that your TPS65982-EVM maybe got damaged?
Can you check the LDO_3V3 voltage of the device? To do this, first plug in the dell barrel jack. Next, take a multimeter and ground the negative lead on one of the ground test points. Then find U1 (this is the 8 pin SPI-Flash chip). Pin 8 of U1 should be 3.3V, can you check pin 8 of U1 with a multimeter?

Dear Eric,

Thank you for your reply I found the 8 pin SPI flash chip U1 and measured the voltage on PIN8 (I think it is PIN8 but could also be PIN1) and it measures 3.3V (3.2V to be exact) the cross oppossite pin does not show 3.3V so I assume that is PIN1 .

Hi Mitchel,

This is odd, both Pin8 and Pin1 should be 3.3V on the Spi Flash chip (U1). Pin8 is Vcc for the SPI Flash (this is powered by LDO_3V3 from the TPS65982). and Pin 1 would be one of the SPI lines going to the TPS65982. There is a pull up resistor on those SPI lines to LDO_3V3 so I would expect Pin1 and Pin8 both measure 3.3V.

Any idea how this could have happen?

And how to avoid it from happening again, so I am sure it does not occure again if we decide to order additional TPS65982-EVMs

Hi Mitchel,

I am not sure what happened when the TPS65982-EVM had a malfunction and therefore I cannot advise you on how to predict it from happening. Do you potentially have a different Aardvark you can try to use with it?

No I do not have an additional Aardvark to test it with. Just want to ensure this will not happen in the future. does anyone have the default firmware of the TPS65982-EVM as Low region bin file? since this is currently the only way I can program the evm.

We do not have a low region image for the default EVM configuration. You can make low region images using our application customization tool.
