TUSB422: Can it only be used with a MCU with TCPM?

Dear Community

For a project we want to get 20V and 3A from an USB-PD adapter for our device consuming power of the USB port (Upstream Facing Port (UFP) mode).
I discovered the TUSB422 as a very nice solution for power bigger than 15W. In the datasheet it is mentioned that the configuration is over I2C. But: "An external microprocessor, containing USB Type-C Port Manager (TCPM), communicates with the TUSB422 through an I2C interface" is needed.

I want to ask if the TUSB422 can only be used with an special TCPM MCU? Or can any standard 8Bit or 32Bit MCU be used for programming the TUSB422?

Hello Felix,

Any microcontroller with I2C interface can work, the TCPM feature must be implemented in the microcontroller, it can be an actual module or coded manually. For the application example, we use the MSP430, a low-power microcontroller that has no TCPM module, so the feature was implemented as code. You can request the example code here.
