AM26C31: selecting the right driver for my RS422 board

Part Number: AM26C31
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AM26LS31, AM26LV31E, AM26LV31

Dear TI,

I spent hours looking at the datasheet of different driver for my RS422 board. I can not see the difference between :

 AM26C31 , DS26C31 , DS26LS31 and AM26LS31 !

Can you help me choose the best option regarding performance, current consumption and future availability.

Thank you

  • Hey Mohamed,

The difference between the LS and C version of the parts is mainly the switching characteristics. The typical values for the C version are almost twice as fast than the LS, with better Max times as well. Note: LS stands for Low Power Schottky and is an older technology whereas C stands for CMOS.

The AM and DS were originally made by different manufacturers, AM belonged to Texas Instruments Incorporated while DS was made by National Semi before Texas Instruments Incorporated Acquired them. TI was competing with National Semi at the time and made the AM device therefore the two devices are very similar.

From these two bits of information, choosing the C version of the device will give us better performance. Then in regard to current consumption which you stated is important to you, the DS26C31 has a max of about 2mA of current draw whereas the AM26C31 has a maximum of 3.2mA.

From this I would recommend the DS26C31.
  • thank you very much
  • Hi, Thanks for your reply, this also clear my puzzle. BTW, what's the difference between AM26C31 and AM26LV31? which one is better? I want to control motor using FPGA, there are two options 1, using 3.3V IO and AM26LV31E 2, using 3.3V IO and level translator, and using 5V version of 422 drivers, such as AM26C31, DS26C31TM which option should I use ? Thanks!
  • Hi byliu,

I noticed your other thread on this topic and replied to that one earlier:
