TPS65986: TPS65986/HD3SS460 Schematic Review

Part Number: TPS65986

Hi Expert,

Could you please help me to review the attached schematics?

My customer is having trouble programming the firmware using SPI.

They used the TPS6598x Utilities GUI to program the firmware but always saw a "BOOT" indicating the firmware was not programmed.

What are your suggestions?

Thank you!

  • Hi Roy,

I'm more than happy to help out here. I understand how this can be frustrating and I'm going to try to isolate the problem. Below are several steps to take:

    1) Could you try to build this application on our EVM board? This is the best way for us to debug the issue at hand.
    2) Do you have the latest version of the configuration tool (3.10)?
    3) What firmware template are you trying to build (UFP, DFP, DRD, etc.)?
    4) Did you copy our TPS65986EVM design and the DP EVM expansion board on your project? We highly recommend copying our designs.
    5) What's the application? Could you draw up (or explain in words) a block diagram of what you're connecting and how it's all connected (ex., PC (host) to a monitor through display port)?

Also, please follow the user's guide for the TPS6598x Customization GUI firmware: www.ti.com/.../slvuar8a.pdf

I'll take a look at the schematic and respond by tomorrow. Thanks again Roy for picking our parts for your customers :-)
  • Hi Roy,

I've noticed that the schematic has several errors (C_CCx lines need a 220/330uF cap, schotky diode is needed on VBUS, LDO_3V3 should power the SPI chip, etc.). I highly reccomend to copy the schematic on our TPS65986EVM user's guide (page 22-28). Also, I reccomend to copy the schematic on the DP-Expansion EVM user's guide for the HD3SS460 device.

    '86 EVM user's guide: www.ti.com/.../slvuan9a.pdf
    DP EVM user's guide: www.ti.com/.../slvuar1.pdf

I would start with copying the designs, but I always reccomend to build your application on our EVM boards first. I hope this helps :-)
  • Hi Aramis,

Thank you so much for the support! I will pass your response to my customer and suggest them copy the schematics on our EVMs.

Please find the answers to the questions in your first post as below:
    1) Could you try to build this application on our EVM board? This is the best way for us to debug the issue at hand.
A: Yes, we have been working with the TPS65986EVM and the DP EXPANSION SINK EVM but having some issues with these boards.
Please refer to another E2E post for more details: e2e.ti.com/.../2321451

    2) Do you have the latest version of the configuration tool (3.10)?
A: I'm using the 3.08 version. Do you recommend me to update the config tool?

    3) What firmware template are you trying to build (UFP, DFP, DRD, etc.)?
    A: I'm building a UFP firmware.

    4) Did you copy our TPS65986EVM design and the DP EVM expansion board on your project? We highly recommend copying our designs.
A: I think the customer did reference our EVMs but made some modifications to them.

    5) What's the application? Could you draw up (or explain in words) a block diagram of what you're connecting and how it's all connected (ex., PC (host) to a monitor through display port)?
A: The application is a smartphone(Host) to a Monitor through DisplayPort. Our EVMs act as a dongle in this case.

    Best regards,

    Roy Hsu
  • Hi Roy,

Thank you for your respones above. The 3.08 version should work on our EVM boards. Feel free to keep this version for now.
